The
discoveries of different ancient ruins indicate that Libya has deep connections with
civilization of ancient world. About 900 B.C Phoenicians had set-up 3 strategic trading
centers along the Libya western coast: Leptis Magna, Oea (Tripoli today) and Sabarata. In
the eastern part Cyrenaica where the Greeks established what is known
Pentapolis, these are: Cyrene, Appollonia, Barca (and its port Ptolemais), Tauchira and
Euhesperides (later Berenice), today these sites are known as: Shahat, Susa, El-Marj (and
Tolmeitha), Tocra and Benghazi. |
Libya had passed under
the Carthaginian influence and Ptolemaic rulers, then the Punic period which ended by 146
B.C when the Romans defeated Carthage, and became rulers of thewhole Libyan Coast, till
the Moslems conquest in 643 A.D. After this came the Spaniards and the knights of St.
John, after them came the Turkish rulers in 16th century, until they were defeated by
Italian colonization in 1911, which lasts till the end of World War II in 1945. |
